GUIDE

What is the small business capability gap?

A small business capability gap is the distance between what your business needs to do to grow and what it can reliably do without the owner in the middle of it. You identify yours by looking for the tasks that only work when you do them, the ones that stall when you step away.

Q&A

How do I identify the real constraint in my business?

The real constraint is the one part of your business that sets the pace for everything else, and you find it by tracing where work waits rather than where it hurts. Follow the queues, the rework and the decisions that stall, then test the one you think is binding before you spend money anywhere else.

GUIDE

What are the stages of business growth?

The five stages of business growth are Existence, Survival, Success, Take-Off and Resource Maturity. Each stage changes what the business needs from its owner, and knowing which stage you are in tells you what to build next.

Q&A

Why has my business stopped growing?

Usually because the way of working that built the business has reached its ceiling. The plateau is a stage signal, common after early success. Operational competence gets a business to steady ground, and growing beyond it asks for a different capability, so growth returns when the owner builds the next layer instead of pushing harder on the last one.

Q&A

How long does it take to see results from a business program?

It depends on what you count as a result, and on whether the program measures anything at all. In our eight-week program most owners leave with decisions made and a plan they are using, a smaller number see a commercial change inside the eight weeks, and the larger financial results build over the quarters that follow.

Q&A

How do I know whether I need to hire?

Run the test before you post the ad. If the work that's drowning you has no written process, hiring buys you a second person doing it from memory. Count the hours, check whether the work is repeatable, and decide between systemising, automating and hiring. Most owners need the system first, and a smaller hire second.

Q&A

What is the difference between the Next-Level Growth Program and Lead with AI?

The Next-Level Growth Program builds the system your business runs on. Lead with AI takes a business that already has that system and redesigns it to be AI-native, building your own workflows and tools on top. One is the foundation and the other is the multiplier. The Capability Snapshot reads which one your business is ready for.

Q&A

Why does innovation matter for a small business?

Because the conditions your business runs in keep changing, and innovation is simply the capability to keep pace. It is not about being flashy or first. It is the steady ability to improve how you work and what you offer, so the business stays fit as the world moves.

Q&A

Who created the five stages of small business growth?

The five stages of small business growth were defined by Neil C. Churchill and Virginia L. Lewis in a 1983 Harvard Business Review article. The five stages are Existence, Survival, Success, Take-Off and Resource Maturity, and each one asks something different of the owner.

Q&A

Why don't customers see the value in what I offer?

Usually because the value is clear to you but has not been made clear to them. Owners tend to describe what they do, when customers buy the outcome it gives them. Getting your value proposition sharp, before you build more, is what makes the offer make sense to them.

Q&A

Why does my business get busier without getting better?

Because activity and progress are not the same thing, so a full day can produce motion without producing money. When sales, pricing, delivery and operations are each working hard without working together, effort leaks at the joins, and the answer is to connect the parts rather than add more hours.

Completing the 25Eight program provided clarity at a critical point in my business journey. It challenged how I think about leadership, scale, and long-term decision making — not through theory, but through practical, real-world conversations with experienced facilitators and peers. The program helped me step back from daily operations and focus on building systems, people, and structure that support sustainable growth.

After more than 10 small business start-ups as well as an MEI at Swinburne it was awesome to be critically thinking more in depth about business again. It is so easy to become comfortable and to stop setting challenges as you get towards the perceived end of working life era. This course is a ripper reminder.

Being part of the Next Level Growth Program was exactly what I needed. Sam’s support helped me bring clarity to my brand and finally find the words to express what Nuovo Skin truly stands for. The one-on-one sessions were powerful; I left each one feeling more confident, focused, and aligned. It’s shifted how I lead, how I communicate, and how I grow the business with purpose.
