Artificial intelligence, machine learning and large language models are three different things, and the difference is worth knowing before you buy anything. Artificial intelligence is the broad field: software doing work that would normally need human intelligence. Machine learning is the main method modern AI is built with, where systems learn patterns from large amounts of data rather than following rules someone wrote by hand. A large language model, or LLM, is a machine learning system trained to predict language, and it is what sits underneath tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini. So an LLM is a kind of machine learning, and machine learning is a kind of artificial intelligence.
AI is everywhere right now, and most explanations either assume a technical background or drown the basics in hype. In this first video of the AI for Business series, 25eight CEO Sam Hurley breaks down the three terms every business owner needs before anything else: artificial intelligence, machine learning and large language models.
The core argument is simple. The three terms get used interchangeably, and they are different things. Artificial intelligence is the broad field: software doing tasks that would normally need human intelligence. Machine learning is the main way modern AI is built, with systems learning patterns from enormous amounts of data rather than following programmed rules. Large language models, or LLMs, are the machine learning systems behind tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini. They work by predicting language, and your phone's autocomplete is a surprisingly good analogy for what they do at a much larger scale. The chat tools you use day to day are interfaces sitting on top of these models. Understanding that much already puts you ahead of most buyers of AI software.
Key points
- AI, machine learning and LLMs are three different things, and knowing the difference cuts through most marketing claims.
- Machine learning systems learn patterns from data rather than following hand-written rules.
- LLMs predict plausible language; autocomplete at enormous scale is a fair mental model.
- Tools like ChatGPT are interfaces built on top of underlying models.
- None of this requires a computer science degree, just a working vocabulary.

Where this fits
This video is part of AI for small business, the guide that runs through the series in order. The questions most owners ask next are how AI is trained, and why different models feel different, AI vs AI agents: what is the difference? and five misconceptions about how AI works.
Frequently asked questions
Is an LLM AI? Yes. A large language model is one kind of artificial intelligence. AI is the broad field, and an LLM is a specific type of system within it.
Is an LLM machine learning? Yes. Large language models are built using machine learning, so every LLM is a machine learning system. The reverse does not hold, because plenty of machine learning has nothing to do with language.
What is the difference between AI and an LLM? AI is the field. An LLM is a particular kind of AI that works by predicting language. When people say AI today they usually mean an LLM, which is why the two terms get used as though they mean the same thing.
What is machine learning in plain English? Software that learns patterns from examples rather than following instructions written by a person. Show it enough examples and it works out the pattern, which is why the quality of the data matters so much.
Is ChatGPT an LLM? ChatGPT is an interface sitting on top of an LLM. The model does the predicting, and the chat window is how you talk to it. The same is true of Claude, Copilot and Gemini.
Do I need to understand any of this to use AI in my business? You need the vocabulary rather than the engineering. Knowing that an LLM predicts language explains most of what these tools are good at, and most of where they go wrong, and it makes you a much harder person to sell to.
