Most business owners don’t have an information problem
With access to more knowledge than ever before. Knowledge is not the advantage; human capability is.
25eight exists to build vital capabilities in a short space of time to ensure no one is left behind in changing economies.
Why 25eight exists
Small businesses are the backbone of society, if they survive, communities thrive. Our Why is what drives our story.
When we started out, we believed the biggest problem to solve was time. It’s wasn’t the lack of knowledge or skills necessarily, it was the lack of time to develop them. Small business owners are time-poor and needed a solution that would fit in their busy schedules. Over the decade that we have supported thousands of businesses, we realised it was more than time and more than knowledge. It was human capability.
The Capability Era
Most of what has been built to help small and medium businesses grow was designed for a different era.
Workshops, masterclasses, expert mentoring, downloadable frameworks, these tools were the right response to an information problem. When knowledge was scarce and hard to access, getting it into the hands of business leaders as efficiently as possible made sense. That model served a genuine purpose.
The problem is that information is no longer scarce. Any question a business owner could bring to a workshop can now be answered in minutes. Frameworks are everywhere. Strategies have been documented, packaged, and redistributed at every price point across every platform. And yet businesses are not growing faster, leaders are not making better decisions, and the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it has not closed.
It has widened.
We are no longer in an information problem. We are in a capability problem. And capability cannot be built by attending something or downloading something or following someone else's blueprint. It is built through guided application, honest diagnosis, real feedback, and the sustained practice of doing the work in your specific context with genuine support.
That is what 25eight was built to provide.
The Human Bottleneck
The bottleneck in most businesses is not information. It is the human leading it.
Not as a criticism. As the most useful thing we have learned in a decade of working with small and medium business leaders through economic transitions, technological disruption, and the particular complexity of building something meaningful with limited time and resources.
The leader's clarity, confidence, self-awareness, and capacity to apply what they know under real conditions. These are the variables that determine whether a business grows, whether a strategy executes, whether new technology creates value or simply adds noise. Everything else is happens because of those human capabilities.
This is why we start with diagnosis, not content. Before a business owner can build the right capabilities, they need an honest picture of where their gaps actually are, not where they think they are, not where a generic framework says they should be, but where the evidence shows they are. The diagnostic is the first act of the real work, and it changes everything that follows.
It is also why we measure what matters. We measure attendance and satisfaction scores, but not as success metrics. What we measure is actual capability change: pre and post diagnostic shift, the quality of the artefacts produced, the behaviours that change, the outcomes that follow.
In the Capability Era, the only evidence worth producing is evidence that capability grew.
Sam Hurley
Sam Hurley grew up in a regional mining town in the UK at the moment the industry that had sustained it for generations disappeared. She watched what happens when an economy transitions faster than the people inside it can adapt. This wasn’t an abstract policy problem but as the lived reality of a community she was part of.
Her undergraduate research in Geography and International Politics examined the socio-economic impact of transitioning industries on local communities. What she found was consistent: the communities that recovered were not the ones with the most information about what was happening. They were the ones with the human capability to respond; the adaptability, the confidence, the practical skills to do something different in conditions that had not existed before.
That finding has shaped everything 25eight does.
25eight exists because that kind of support has been consistently under built relative to the demand for it, particularly for smaller businesses that do not have the luxury of long programs, large training budgets, or the time to separate learning from doing.
Sam has led the charge on global expansion and digital transformation projects in her 20 years of industry experience and passionately supported and advocated for small businesses at the helm of 25eight since 2015. She combines visionary thinking with operational efficiency to drive growth for everyone she serves. Her Master of Teaching is the icing on the cake as she designs programs to equips leaders with the capabilities and confidence to drive the change their business needs to reach the next stage in its evolution. She ensures new ways of thinking and working are adopted in a short space of time with the least amount of friction. Her agile problem solving and digital nous enable anyone she works with to work smarter, not harder.
She believes that if you build the human, the business follows.
